India Expansion for SaaS Startups 2026 | Series A-B Playbook | Lionforce
SaaS startups have specific India hiring needs that off-the-shelf EOR services do not address well. After placing 200+ engineers, designers, and operators into Series A-B SaaS startups since 2020, here is the playbook we wish founders read before they signed any vendor.
Why SaaS startups choose India for engineering scale
Three reasons consistently dominate:
- Burn-rate extension. Replacing a $200K SF engineer with a $70K Bangalore engineer extends runway by 6-9 months for a typical Series A startup. That extra runway often determines whether you reach Series B.
- Engineering depth at scale. India produces 1.5M+ engineering graduates per year. The senior tier (8+ years, deep specialisation) is large enough to recruit teams of 20-50 specialised engineers.
- Time zone advantage for follow-the-sun. India + US Pacific gives you 16-18 hour engineering coverage. Bug fixes, customer-facing engineering, and on-call rotations become genuinely 24x7.
The 5 SaaS-specific roles we place most often
Senior full-stack engineers (Next.js / FastAPI / Postgres): The default modern SaaS stack. We place these in 3-4 weeks, $55K-$75K fully loaded.
AI/ML engineers: RAG, embeddings, fine-tuning, model serving. Strong India talent pool, $75K-$95K fully loaded for 5-7 year experience.
SRE / DevOps engineers: AWS / GCP / Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability. Critical for product-led SaaS scale. $60K-$85K fully loaded.
Data engineers: Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, analytics infrastructure. $55K-$75K fully loaded.
Customer success engineers (technical): Implementation engineers who write code to onboard customers. Underrated India talent pool, $40K-$55K fully loaded.
The startup-specific risks
Risk 1: Vendor lock-in via complex contracts. Some EORs lock you into 12-month minimums and high exit fees. As a startup, you need 30-day exit terms. Lionforce contracts default to 30-day notice for any reason.
Risk 2: Hiring the wrong seniority. Startups often hire too senior or too junior. The right answer for most Series A startups is senior individual contributors (no managers yet), 70% of headcount at 5-9 years experience.
Risk 3: Equity participation. India employees value equity, but pre-2024, ESOP grants were tax-disadvantaged. Lionforce now supports ESOP grants in compliant structures. If your EOR cannot, that is a red flag.
What success looks like
Our reference SaaS deployment from 2024-25: a Series B fintech that grew India engineering from 0 to 38 in 11 months. Stack: Next.js, FastAPI, Snowflake, AWS. Outcomes: shipped 4 major products vs 2 in the prior 11 months, $3.4M ARR added, 0 senior attrition. Total all-in cost: $2.1M for 11 months vs estimated $5.4M for an equivalent SF team.
